Deck Building in Claremont, NC: What Local Homes Need
Claremont is a small town of 1,692 people (2020 census) in eastern Catawba County. First known as Charlotte Crossing and later Setzer Depot, it took the name Claremont in 1892 and incorporated in 1893. US-70 runs through the center of town and I-40 passes just to the north at Exit 135, about 12 miles from Hickory and 16 from Statesville.
CommScope moved its headquarters from Hickory to Claremont in 2023 before relocating to Texas in 2025, a reminder of how the I-40 corridor ties this small town to the wider region. Day to day, Claremont keeps a small-town pace, with US-70 serving as its main street.
Claremont's 2010 median household income was $40,652, and with 1,692 residents it remains one of the smaller towns we serve. From Exit 135, Hickory is about 12 miles west and Statesville about 16 miles east, while US-70 carries local traffic straight through the middle of town.
Its landmarks include the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge and Rock Barn Farm, both on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town's housing mixes long-standing homes with newer construction near the interstate.
The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge outside town crosses Lyle Creek; built in 1895 by Andrew Loretz Ramsour, it is one of only two covered bridges left in North Carolina and possibly the last wooden Haupt-truss bridge in the country.
